Air Chief Marshal (Dr) NC Suri (Retd.)
An Ardent Bhagwan Sathya Sai Baba Devotee

Air Chief Marshal Suri at the onset of his talk congratulated the members of the Inter-faith forum for their endeavour to bring about sanity and civility in our day to day living by promoting better understanding of each others systems of faith / religion, as these have a profound effect on the human behaviour. He added that there was a need for an honest introspection as to whether the results attained by such forums were commensurate with the effort put in for creating Unity in Diversity. He highlighted that these forums were not for personal aggrandizement in gaining credentials or recognition but for a commitment to creating a better tomorrow, based on human values.

He then stated that life from birth to death was akin to a huge mass of water flowing over the earth's surface in an uncontrolled manner, which in its wake, caused massive destruction. Nature put two banks to it, making it a river in order to make it flow over the earth in a controlled manner, creating fertility of the soil and thus sustaining the human, animal and vegetable kingdom. Similarly, it was essential to put two banks to our life. The first bank is the realization that there is only one God who is omnipresent, omniscient and omnipotent. The second bank relates to praying to whomsoever one wants and calling Him by whatever name one wants but praying assiduously. This prayer will reach the one and the only God whom we call by different names and to whom we attribute numerous titles. It is in this context that Dr Suri underscored that for more than three years, he recited the prayers of nine different faiths every morning along with the Gayatri mantra and his prayers always reached God who was born in his heart and lived in his mind on a 24/7 basis.

Dr Suri concluded his address by stating unequivocally that in a civilized society there was no room for parochialism and compartmentalization. The need of the hour is understanding that there are no Greater Gods but lesser human beings. In the ultimate analysis, the core values of all religions are basically the same i.e., "The Fatherhood of God and the Brotherhood of Mankind".
