Technical Session I '=' Jacaranda Hall
12:15-1:30pm Interfaith Partnerships & Global Ethics

In the last 20 years, there have been many efforts to establish a global ethic as the moral basis for peace in a troubled world. For such a framework to have true moral legitimacy, it needs to be built upon universal, spiritual principles that are essentially of the “laws of nature and of nature’s God.” Faith leaders, as the moral conscience of a community and nation, should guide the way to establish such a global ethic. This session will discuss key spiritual principles and ways in which interfaith partnerships can advance a global ethical framework for peace.

Identity-based Conflicts:

Globalization and Multiculturalism

Since WWII, identity-based conflicts among non-state actors have accounted for the majority of violent clashes in the world. Many point to globalization and the increase in interactions between groups where lines of difference can sharpen or erupt into conflict. This session will explore how an increasingly interconnected world community can address identity-based conflicts. We will also discuss how to build a common ground among disparate groups to mitigate violence and increase trust, respect and cooperation.

Global Peace Leadership Conference, India 2014, New Delhi

The World’s Religions have been instrumental in awakening human consciousness based on universal human values. The faith traditions have decisively shaped world civilizations with an emphasis on human virtues. The Global Peace Foundation and its partners have always visualized an ideal society, based on the three-fold pillars of interfaith, family, and service. It has always valued the rich heritage of faiths, which are seen not as obstacles to peace, but a fundamental source of reconciliation and peace- building. Here, we would like to mention the noble names of Dr. Albert Schweitzer, Mahatma Gandhi, Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., and Mother Teresa, who made a great contribution to the cause of justice, equity and fair play. Throughout the Ages, the spiritual leaders have been the source of peace and hope and they helped in creating spiritual atmosphere for social cohesion.

All Spiritual Scriptures advocate “living for the greater good” of mankind. There is a need for creative collaboration and multi-sector partnerships to overcome poverty, inequality, hunger, disease, ignorance and illiteracy. When human aspirations are expressed in universal principles and shared values, we can bring about fundamental changes in our societies and the whole world.

It is on a common platform that the spirituals leaders and scholars of all faiths can speak with one voice against religious fundamentalism and extremism. In this respect, we are happy to mention the name of Nadhlatul Ulama from Indonesia, which is one of our major international interfaith partners. NU is the largest Muslim civic organization in Indonesia, which is the most populous Muslim country in the world.

The power of a united family can quell any turmoil in the world---from the strife and poverty -ridden Africa to the ongoing conflict in the Middle East, and also the strife in the Korean Peninsula. As international citizens, let’s take a pledge to work for the realization of the vision of one world family under God. Towards this lofty vision, GPF – India, Interfaith Foundation India and IASE University purpose to hold a two- day Global Peace and Leadership Conference at Habitat Centre, New Delhi-India 9th -10th December 2014.

Objectives

  1. To promote social cohesion based on universal principles and shared values.

  2. To develop a consensus among religious leaders and scholars of different persuasions towards a Global Ethic.

  3. To develop youth movement for a culture of Peace and Service.

  4. To develop interfaith partnerships on national and regional levels and create a common platform to establish and hold universal ethics and aspirations for the greater human family.

Global Peace Leadership Conference is a platform to articulate universal principles and build a consensus around shared values, guided by the unique vision of ‘One Family Under God’. The Global Peace Leadership Conference aims to promote social cohesion, develop a consensus.

Delhi Declaration

Dear Leaders:

Greetings of Peace from the Global Peace Leadership Conference Secretariat. We want to congratulate you on your participation in building, “Peace and Harmony through Interfaith Partnerships” on the 9th and 10th of December, 2014 at the India Habitat Centre, Lodi Roadin New Delhi, India. GPLC- New Delhi DECLARATION

A Vision and Global Framework for One Family Under God
New Delhi, India - December 9-10, 2014

PREAMBLE

The world today faces a spiritual crisis, as evidenced by the continuous rise of identity-based conflicts. These conflicts over nationality, ethnicity, religion and tribal affiliations threaten social relations on every level, especially with globalization expanding the significance and reach of previously localized challenges. While tremendous advances have been achieved in every sector of human society, they have failed to keep apace with our moral and ethical capacities - to the detriment of all life on earth. It is thus imperative that moral and spiritual leaders of the world work together to articulate universal ethical principles and values that can form the basis for social cohesion, shared agreements and lasting peace.

Whereas human ingenuity, intellect and creativity have through the past millennia built civilizations that have inspired human hearts and minds to pursue creative endeavors; at the same time the world has been plagued by intolerance, ignorance, hatred, mistrust, discrimination and ravaged by ethnic, racial, religious, economic, social, and political conflicts.

Whereas religions and faiths have been fountain-springs of spiritually inspired ethics; at the same time religious rivalries and ethnic conflicts have spread intolerance and violence, thus obscuring the unifying vision of humanity as one family under God.

Whereas tremendous advances in science and technology have created unprecedented material wealth, technological and medical advances; at the same time, they have been misused for producing nuclear and other weapons of mass destruction and a rampant armament race with tremendous allocation of resources that could be directed to overcome poverty, inequity, disease, ignorance, illiteracy and hunger.

Whereas different religions have promulgated the idea of the world as one family under God, we have not carried it out in practice. Into this vacuum, the possessive, exploitative, abusive, and discriminatory instincts of humanity have divided our world.

Whereas in moderntimes leaders like Mahatma Gandhi, Hon’ble Nelson Mandela, Mother Teresa, and the Rev. Dr Martin Luther King, Jr.have courageously and effectively used non-violent strategiesfor gaining political independence, ending apartheid, championing compassion in action, fighting racial discrimination, and tirelessly advocating multiculturalism. At the same time, the world has drifted towards escalating violence and terrorism. The world has lost hold of our common human identity and the unifying shared values that can bring about a cohesive society.

The Pledge

On the occasion of the Global Peace Leadership Conference held in New Delhi, India on the 9thand 10thof December, 2014, we the participants from all over the region, solemnly pledge:

  1. To commit ourselves with courage and resolve to forge vibrant and meaningful interfaith partnerships and programs for promoting universal social cohesion based on our common identity, universal principles, and shared values to overcome ethnic, religious, gender, social and cultural barriers.

  2. To inspire a spirit of unity and conciliation in place of conflict and confrontation, equity and fair play in place of iniquity and exploitation towards all human beings irrespective of color, gender, creed, religion, ethnicity or geographical location.

  3. To engage faith leaders and academics in the task of articulating a global ethical framework based on universal principles and values, found in the world’s religions. This framework could then be applied to the private and public spheres.

  4. To establish the means through which a global ethical framework can guide substantive discussions on forging cooperation on shared aspirations and values among faith leaders.

  5. To persuade faith leaders to play a more significant role in educating and encouraging their followers towards a lifestyle of service to others beyond the narrow boundaries that presently divide the various religious communities.

  6. To transmit these ideals through a multi-sector network of leaders and encourage its implementation starting at the grassroots level of the extended family.

  7. To design and implement innovative interfaith grassroots projects in healthcare, education, disaster relief, poverty amelioration, enhancing employability, environmental care, drug-addiction elimination and promotion of family values as the common ground for action-oriented interfaith partnerships.

  8. To collect, collate and determine the best practices through various case studies of interfaith initiatives within partnering countries and shared on a global stage.

  9. To undertake with vigor and persuasive endeavor, through specific projects, the task of inculcating in all sectors of society, particularly among the youth, the ethical and moral values of compassion, piety, charity, generosity and integrity.

  10. To engage and mould the youth in value education and create programs that foster personal transformative experiences, especially those that build bridges of friendship, understanding, and harmonious integration, across the barriers of religion, ethnicity and social status.

  11. To enrich the academic education of the upcoming young generation in schools and colleges through shaping a mindset that values integrity, equity, and fair play.

  12. To support and encourage projects aimed at women’s emancipation through skill development, particularly of tribal and backward communities.

  13. To establish links with select civil society organizations already engaged in peace building work to create a coalition of global partners working towards a shared vision for peace and prosperity.

  14. To encourage the expansion of socially responsible business practices and corporate social responsibility (CSR), especially in terms of accelerating support for social cohesion programs.

And as such, this unifying vision of one family under God will spread through the various sectors of society for the greater good of all humanity.

Thanking You.
